Alboran has developed unique algorithms that model wellbore stability in ductile (salt bodies) and brittle (shale rock) regimes. The exploration of hydrocarbon targets has now entered a phase where the success rate of drilling operations is becoming ever more critically dependent on optimized wellbore placement using detailed pre-drill models. The wellbore stresses at all depths in the planned borehole need to be quantified and modelled by a vast array of tools and methods. Because drilling and completion costs account for nearly twothirds of the costs of field development, routine geomechanical analyses before drilling is highly cost effective. Alboran has performed wellbore stability studies for (1) off-shore drilling in salt basins and (2) land-based drilling in shale formations.
